Rock Art in the Alps

The prolific petroglygphs scattered throughout the Alps suggests a great deal of early settlement. The following two pages are dedicated to this region.

Val Camonica (Lombardy Italy, central Alps) Over 200,000 petroglyphs found, varied from paleolithic hunting scenes, bronze age axes and spear designs (as depicted) through to Roman era images complete with Latin inscriptions and crosses. Currently chronology and insight into the people who created these is being researched by the Footsteps of Man Archaeological Cooperative. UNESCO has included Val Camonica as the first World Heritage Site in Italy.
