Rock Art in the Alps

Valtellina (north central Alps near Switzerland) A terraced, fertile landscape, Valtellina contains two distinct locations covered in Rock Art. The Rupe Magna (big rock) and near Teglio a collection of copper age stelae. Images found include the 'jumping men' seen above, spirals, hunting scenes and several scenes depicting a group of individuals with raised arms holding spears, possibly demonstrating a ritualized dance. Periods responsible for these images are greatly varied, as each surface is layered with art of different settlements and time periods.

Discarded quartz tools discovered in the area indicate these were possibly used to carve the images.
