Rock Art of Italy: Sardinia

Sardinia In all of Italy, Sardinia's 'rock art' is truly unique. Here we do not find carved rock surfaces, but complete labrynths of tombs complete with symbolic statues and figurines. Called 'fairy tombs', 'house of the witches', 'giant tombs' and 'tomb labrynths', these man made caves dating from roughly 6,000 -2500 bc are carved out in an elaborate series comprising an entire necropolis. They are carved mostly from the area's local sandstone. Accompanying grave goods found with the human remains include sea shells, figurines, pottery and copper goods from neighboring countries as far as Ireland.

The tombs are in various states of repair, but are still a popular sight for visitors to the island thanks to ongoing conservation efforts.
