Rock Art of Spain

Spain An abundance of rock art can be found throughout Spain, concentrated mostly in the coastal cities. Similar to France's rock art, here we find pictographs (paintings on rock rather than carvings or petroglyphs) created in natural sanctuaries such as caves, caverns and large outcroppings in Spain's rockier areas. Most have been found created with red ochre. Dating is varied, starting with neolithic through to bronze age.

Shown here, Spain's pictographs involve a highly sophisticated level of artistry, images are fluid and graceful, depicting warriors, women involved in some sort of spiritual dance and animals. Some stones also contain rings and 'cup marks' or holes, their significance is unknown but similar designs can be found in neighboring countries.

All 3 of these images were obtained from EuroPreArt.net, an excellent site with a complete map of all rock art in Spain.

Up next we cross over to North Africa!
